Let’s face it, life can be pretty stressful and, if you’re not careful, that stress can creep into lots of different parts of your life. Many of us don’t realize it but we carry our stress around with us even when we’re not actually doing anything stressful. A hard day at work can end up coming home with us, causing tension and arguments with our friends and family. Not only that but it can have genuine negative effects on your health. Stress and tension have been linked to hair loss, IBS and bad posture to name but a few. So what can you do? Well, the best possible thing is to actually take some time to try and rid yourself of all of that stress. That’s actually not as easy as it sounds, the problem with stress is that it likes to get in the way. When you’re trying to relax, it likes to pop up and remind of all the things you still have to do at work and at home. But don’t worry, there are things that you can do. Here are a few simple ways to help you relax and shake off the day’s stress.
Empty the house
Spending time with your family and loved ones is incredibly important and can do a lot to help you deal with stress. But sometimes you just need time on your own. There’s nothing wrong with kicking your partner or housemates out of the house for a while. If you have children, get your partner or someone else to take them out for a while. Get the house to yourself and just enjoy the peace and quiet, even if it’s just for a while. There’s an attitude that a lot of people have, especially when you have a family, that there’s something wrong with wanting to spend some time on your own without having to worry about everyone else for a while. This leads to a lot of people giving themselves up to looking after their family and friends but completely burning out because they never get a chance to ask for the same in return. If you need a rest then there really is nothing wrong with asking to be left alone for a little while.
Have a long soak
When people say you carry stress around with you, they really mean it. Your muscles become incredibly tense and knotted when you’re dealing with a lot of stress. Taking a long soak in the bath can do wonders for loosening your muscles. You should also get some essential oils to breathe in while you relax. Aromatherapy has been shown to help relax your body and your mind, helping you forget the stress of daily life just that little bit more easily. You may even want to try some CBD oil to help you relax even further and relieve the tension in your muscles. Not only that but it’s the kind of thing that you can just lose yourself in for a while. After all, there’s no chance that you can end up getting distracted or dragged away to do anything else while you’re in the bath. Instead, you can just lay there in the water and let the world around you drift away for a little while.

Treat yourself
It can often feel kind of difficult to justify treating yourself. After all, you’ve often got so many things to worry about that doing anything that’s purely for yourself can feel like an indulgence that you shouldn’t really be allowing yourself to have. However, the truth is that there’s always something to be said for treating yourself every now and then. After all, you work hard all of the time to provide for yourself and for the people around you, so why shouldn’t you take the time to do something nice for yourself. How you treat yourself is totally up to you. Maybe you want to buy yourself a nice bottle of wine to relax with in the tub. Or perhaps you want to spend the day being pampered in a spa. Or maybe you just want to pick out a book that you’ve had your eye on and spend the entire day sitting on the couch reading. Whatever makes you happy.
Do nothing
When was the last time that you did nothing? And not just that you weren’t busy but when you took the time to just stop for a while. There’s a good chance that you probably can’t remember the last time you did that at all. The world that we live in is one that is constantly moving and that can be great, but it can also be exhausting. This is especially true now that so many of us have smartphones. You’re always just a second away from being connected to the entire rest of the world through social media, watching all kinds of stuff on youtube or Netflix, playing games, or even getting work done no matter where you are. Sometimes, in order to relax the best thing that you can do is to just put all of those things away for a little while and do absolutely nothing. You don’t have to be some kind of master of meditation but it’s something that has been shown to have some extremely positive effects for a lot of people.
There really isn’t a single perfect way to relax. The point is to find what it is that relaxes and recharges you. Don’t let anyone else tell you what you should or should not be doing. If watching TV or reading a book help you relax, that’s great. But if you prefer working out or going for a long walk, that’s just fine too! No matter what it is that you’re doing, make sure you’re doing it for yourself, not because you think you should be doing it. If you do something because you think you should, it’s just going to become another source of stress. Remember, this is your time, spend it however you want.
