Why is it that the parents’ bedroom is often the last room in the home to get some TLC? Yes, when you have kids, it’s true that sleep is not something you get a lot of. But that shouldn’t mean the bedroom décor gets ignored.
However, we know that our bedrooms do get left. And before we know it, we’re staring at a tired and slightly shabby room that’s desperately in need of redecorating. This usually means that when you do decide to rejuvenate the bedroom, the whole lot needs doing. Walls, floors, furniture, everything.
Because it’s been a while since you last decorated, there can be some hidden problems lurking. One common problem is stripping the wallpaper to find that the plaster has started to crumble. Heavy wallpaper is good at hiding problem plasterwork.
So, do you learn how to skim a wall and fix the problem yourself, or carry on hiding it? Well, you can only carry on hiding a problem for so long. The best solution may be to hire a plasterer to get the walls rectified. Then, you can get the room decorated properly. What’s the downside? You may have to wait a while for the walls to dry out before you can decorate. And it may cause some mess and disruption.

If your carpets have seen better days, it may be time to rip them out and update them with something fresh and modern. Again, once you’ve taken the old carpets out, it’s a good idea to give the flooring a check over to make sure there’re no hidden nasties. If you’ve got wooden floorboards that are in good condition, you may decide to make a feature of them. If you’re putting a new carpet down, don’t be tempted to skimp on the underlay. You want a soft, luxurious feeling carpet in a bedroom, not something that is simply cheap.
Buying new furniture for a bedroom is quite exciting, but also takes some careful planning. There are consultants and interior designers that can do this for you, but you may feel you can save money and plan the room yourself.
First, you’ll need to decide on the style of furniture you like. Then start looking online for the measurements of furniture pieces you want. Next, you’ll need to measure your bedroom to make sure everything will fit. Don’t forget to measure the height of the room when choosing a wardrobe. Finally, if your furniture isn’t flatpack, then you’ll need to check it will fit through the doors and up the stairs!
