It was my daughters sports day last Friday and we had a lovely morning watching her take part in a variety of races and team events. It lasted most of the morning and so afterwards we were pretty hungry. Having forgot to bring a picnic lunch and also forgetting to notify Mini Kat’s school that she wouldn’t need her school dinner that day we decided to leave after the winners were announced and grab something to eat whilst Mini Kat finished her afternoon. The walk is also quite a way and I didn’t want to have to walk home only to have to leave a few minutes later.
We choose the Anton Arms pub in my hometown of Andover which is sort of a half way point on the way home. I walk past it every day and saw it offered two meals for less than a tenner and thought it would be an ideal stop for a bite to eat. The pub is situated on a pretty busy road so it makes a great stop off point and is easy to find and access. There’s a small car park and outside eating and drinking area. We decided to say inside because the traffic can be quite noisy on that road and we wanted to get out of the sun for a bit.
We literally arrived at twelve so the place was very quiet however we did see a few couples and local business professionals head in throughout our visit. The inside seating is well laid out and has plenty of comfy, cosy spaces and tables for lunch. I found the ladies quite well but didn’t see a sign to the gents. We found a spot to sit on one of the comfy sofas next to a window.
The Anton Arms has plenty of natural light thanks to the bay windows at the front of the pub and it was clean and tidy inside with plenty of clean, crisp menus available. We selected our food and then ordered at the bar with our drinks. There was a slight issue with my order however it was quickly resolved with a smile and an offer of extra pulled chicken which I couldn’t complain about. Our food came out very quickly and I was happy with the portions considering the price we paid.
I had a double chicken trio burger which came with salad and burger sauce. It was delicious and served with BBQ sauce and skinny fries. Adam went for a Chicken Tikka Masala which came with rice, poppadoms and mango chutney. Both meals were really filling and we also had a side of garlic bread to share. For drinks I just had a diet coke and Adam had a pint of IPA. The service was great and the ladies working lunch both very friendly and helpful. Our condiments and cutlery came shortly after our order was placed and someone popped over to check we were happy with our meal.
I have absolutely no complaints about the Anton Arms. We were in and out and very full when we left however I will return to try the chicken wings and the sundaes, which sounded delicious. The meal and two drinks cost just under £20 which we were very happy with considering the friendly service and hot, well portioned meals.
