  • Health Concerns Women Should Know About

    This is a collaborative post.

As women, there are many specific health concerns and conditions to look out for which need a lot of attention. The more you know about your own body, the better off you are, as you can then make all the right steps towards living as healthy a life as possible. In this post, we are going to look at a number of female health issues. Some of them only apply to women, while others might be problems that men can experience too, but which have particular implications for women which you need to know about. Taking care of your own health is hugely important, so make sure that you are doing everything you can to keep on top of it. With any luck, you will then lead a long and healthy life.

    Urinary Problems

Something which is particularly common among women is urinary tract problems. There are many of these, and they all vary slightly, but by far the most common  – and one of the most frustrating to experience – is cystitis. This is actually inflammation of the bladder, and anyone who has experienced it will tell you that it can be both incredibly painful and very annoying to have to deal with. If left alone, it can also become a much more serious issue, so it is important to watch out for this. Typically, cystitis first shows as a persistent need to urinate, coupled with a constant feeling of discomfort in the pelvic floor. You might find that once you start urinating, you then need to keep doing so at regular intervals – but if you hold it in, you will experience more pain. This situation is frustrating, but there are solutions to this problem. One of the best natural treatments is cranberry. Drinking cranberry juice (ideally fresh) will probably help you out with the pain a great deal. You can also get your hands on specific cystitis medicine, which can help greatly. However, mostly it is just a matter of waiting for it to pass – a process which can take days. If it persists, or you start to experience greater pain or pain elsewhere such as in your side, you should visit the doctor.

    Ovarian Cancer

One of the most terrifying thoughts for many women is the idea of developing ovarian cancer. Clearly, cancer of any kind is always serious, but when it comes to this particular kind it can be particularly worrying. This is because it is usually discovered quite late, meaning that it is harder to treat. You will likely have to undergo a good deal of chemotherapy if it does develop  and from the ovaries the cancer can spread quite fast. There is little you can do to prevent cancer, except keep an eye out for it by having regular visits to the gynaecologist. Choose them well, however – many gynaecological claims center around a failure to discover cancers, so you want to make sure you can trust your doctor as much as possible.

    Breast Cancer

Although technically men can also develop breast cancer, it is much more likely in women. This is in fact one of the most common types of cancer in the world. It is therefore hugely important that you know the early warning signs, so that you can get it checked out and hopefully treated as early as possible. Checking your breasts for lumps (which can also appear in the armpit region), having bloody discharge from the nipples, an inverted nipple, a sore or painful breast, or a sudden or noticeable change in the size or shape of a breast are all clear signs of potential cancer, and should be checked out at your earliest convenience. You should also make sure that you are going for regular screenings anyway, just to be sure that you are doing everything you can to catch it early if it does arise.

    Birth Control

If you decide that you want to use birth control, knowing which one to go for can be one of the trickiest decisions you’ll have to make. There are so many options out there now, and it is up to you to work out which you think would be most suitable for you. Many women are now moving away from the pill somewhat. The pill is incredibly effective, but it is also full of plenty of hormones, and it can cause you some health problems in later life. You might find that it interrupts or exacerbates your menstrual cycle, especially with the mini-pill, or that it causes acne or even depression. Make sure you are happy with your birth control option – it is your body.

1 in 3 Women Will Experience Light Bladder Weakness

Did that statistic punch you in the face? It did for me. Then when I went on to hear that light bladder weakness is more common than hayfever…I was just blown away. That’s a lot of people, because honestly, everyone I know suffers with hayfever. Last weekend, I attended a fantastic event hosted by #LightsbyTENA in an effort to raise awareness of the brand and to pass on their #FeelFresh message.

Firstly, I have to say the event was incredibly well organised and a fantastic afternoon with some other wonderful bloggers. It was lovely to meet and speak with Jade from Raising the Rings, Joanne from Opposable Thumbs, Sally from SallyAkins.com and Emma from EmmaVictoriaStokes.com. Toegether, surrounded by champane and beautiful flowers we enjoyed nattering away and a delicious brunch at the beautiful Haymarket Hotel in London.

Raising awareness for light bladder weakness is so important and TENA want to speak to women that may have experienced this because they have a great product for them. They are looking to establish a difference and segregate from the thicker TENA lady products because this isn’t about incontinence. It’s more about as we get a bit older, have kids, drink more and our collagen levels deplete, our bladder and pelvic floor weakens. It’s a pretty natural and normal, but not very glamorous part of getting older, becoming a parent and just well, being human. In most cases, it’s usually nothing to worry about, but if you are worried you should always speak to your GP. After all, you won’t be the first woman to ask ‘is this normal’ and you’ll never be the last woman either.

My question is if this is so common then why don’t we talk about it more often? We talk in a joking way about having a weaker bladder after having kids but it’s still very hush hush. Why? Because it’s a bit gross? We’re women, all we do is gross. We clean everything off our kids, we are happy to talk about our periods and our birth stories but we’re not happy to confide seriously in a friend or a GP about light bladder weakness. We love feeling fresh, we fill our home with beautiful flowers and scent up with gorgeous perfumes and TENA lights have really put a lot of thought into their award winning liner of which they are offering a money back guarantee for you to try their lights product, and if it doesn’t make you feel fresh, you’ll get your money back. I think it’s great that they’re so confident in their product that they’re willing to offer this to their customers. (#FeelFresh or it’s FREE available until 30/6/2017) You can find full T&C’s on their site. I found the below infographic really informative and gave some top tips on how to improve the strength of your bladder and keep light bladder weakness at a distance.

Strengthening our pelvic floor is really helpful for bladder control and it’s so important to do them regularly, especially during and after pregnancy.

After learning more about the Lights by TENA range we moved on to a perfume masterclass which was so much fun. I loved creating a signature scent and I was really surprised by some of the scents I really liked. I’m really happy with the little fragrance I created which I aptly named Candyfloss Dream – it doesn’t smell of Candyfloss though, I’m just not very good at coming up with names. It was exactly what I wanted, a sensual, evening scent with spicy but sweet notes. I used seven different fragrances to create my perfume with a top note of Orange, heart note of Jasmine and base note of Tonka Bean. I absolutely love the fragrance and it’s much longer lasting than those I’ve bought in the past. I notice it all throughout the day and have had a few compliments on it too.

I really enjoyed my day in London with some fellow bloggers working with Lights by TENA and our beautiful flowers and fragrance to take home. They are certainly making me feel fresh. So would jumping in this glorious pool at the Haymarket Hotel…

Say C’est La Vie to Oops Moments

    Oops Moments Happen To Everyone!

I am always happy to discuss things that I am passionate about on this blog and today we’re talking Women’s Health. When referring to women or men’s health, we’re generally talking about the bits ‘down there’ although this piece is more about bladder control, which affects both men and women. But nobody really talks about it. Working in partnership with Tena Lady I am here to say C’est La Vie to Oops moments.

Being a women, after having a baby, I’m not really happy to admit it but my bladder just isn’t as good as it used to be. Every morning I get up and drink my water, coffee and have breakfast straight away. If I have anything past about 7.15am I know that throughout the entire walk to school I’m going to be cursing myself for not popping to the loo enough. Fair enough, it takes me an hour, but I never really had to worry before about being out the house and there not being a loo available. I don’t have any accidents, but when I need to go, I need to go. Pregnancy and birth really put a lot of pressure on the all the organs and so it’s quite natural to have a weaker pelvic floor and then, well, that’s when the Oops moments begin. I’m sure you all know what Tena Lady products do, and we are here to say that they are normal, natural and there are ways to prevent it from happening.

To talk about this a bit better and to go through a few other normal, annoying Oops moments, I have been sent a beautiful goodie bag to help me with daily Oops moments and struggles and to help me say C’est La Vie, it can be fixed!

The first item in this set was a set of fruity scented nail polish remover pads to fix any dodgy nails. These have a fair few multi purposes which makes it a great product. Handy for tidying up nails and any spells of polish that fall onto the carpet. What I love about these is they can also be used to sanitise and clean metal makeup tools be it for nail art or fixing up those brows with tweezers. Another item in the goody bag was dress tape to help keep everything in the right place and prevent any awkward slips!

The cutest item in the bag was the mini sewing kit which we’ve already put to good use using it to sew up any awkward holes and hems!

Other items included a lovely makeup fixing spray which instantly refreshes tired makeup looks, anti static spray to stop skirts and slips from riding up, very handy for the wedding I’m attending next week and some of my favourite makeup remover wipes from Soap and Glory. My favourite item in the bag was the gorgeous smelling St Tropez gradual tan face cream which is helping me build up a lovely glow and balancing out other tan products I’m using to stop streaks from appearing.

All of these products help fix those Oops moments throughout the day, they happen, that’s life! C’est La Vie!

The last item was a pack of Lights by Tena to help prevent any little leaks when laughing too hard, bouncing too much, excersising, walking or just, well, to help. To give more women a C’est La Vie attitude towards a weak bladder. With one in three women experiencing light bladder weakness at some point in their lives, lights by Tena has recently upgraded its range to make it even easier to wave goodbye to unexpected (and unwelcome!) leaks. For more information and a free sample head over to Lights by Tena.

If you’re brave enough feel free to share a funny Oops moment in the comments!
