Having a healthy and fit pregnancy is really important to me because I am overweight. I am already a high risk with a previous c-section and having a high BMI restricts me and means I have extra monitoring throughout to check the growth of the baby. I was really worried at my booking in appointment as I felt my midwife might be critical of my weight but she was in fact really nice. Her advice was that it’s totally possible to have a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby without gaining lots of weight. I am, of course, expecting some weight gain during pregnancy but the way I see it the less I gain the less I have to lose.
My weight has fluctuated up and down since I found out I was pregnant back in January. I was actually 19 stone 7lbs but by the time I had my booking in appointment at 9 Weeks I was actually 19 stone. My last update talked about a total gain of about 8lbs but actually, that isn’t true at all! I have just weighed in this morning, almost at 23 weeks pregnant and I’m now 19 stone 2lbs. Whilst my eating has been far from perfect, I do believe I have lost fat and hopefully will continue to do so with pregnancy safe workouts. This will hopefully mean that any future weight gain is baby, fluid, placenta and uterus growth rather than actual fat. To make sure of this I plan to have a much healthier diet over the summer as I am very conscious we are approaching the third trimester at a fast pace where a lot more weight gain is bound to happen.
Ideally, I would like to maintain my weight from now on throughout the rest of my pregnancy with minimal fat gain. I think that’s key, I don’t want to put on anymore fat myself and instead focus on eating tasty, nutritious food and completing safe exercises in pregnancy. I wanted to share with you some of my top tips to avoid gaining fat when pregnant. It is important to note, however, that I am not a medical expert and your first point of contact should be your Midwife, GP or a nutritionist that specialises in pregnancy based food choices.
A Healthy and Fit Pregnancy
There are lots of things you can do to ensure you have a fit and healthy pregnancy. Just because you are pregnant does not mean you should eat for two. That’s actually a common myth and no extra calories are needed until the last trimester, even then, it’s not a huge amount per day. Keeping up with healthy habits during pregnancy will make post natal weight loss and nutrition much easier. There are a lot of positives about being active in pregnancy, exercising regularly and not only do these ensure you have a fit pregnancy but also helps you to cope during labour. I am all for trying anything that will help me have a positive birth experience. If you are already pretty active there is no need to stop exercising in pregnancy and you can continue for as long as it is comfortable for you. There are, of course, some things you might want to change as it’s recommended that you avoid twisting, laying on your back and overstretching muscles. Whilst you may want to try new exercises during pregnancy, you should take these at your own pace and perhaps speak to a personal trainer or fitness instructor as well as your Midwife before trying anything new. A great place to start with a fit pregnancy is walking every day for around 30 minutes. You might already get this on the school or nursery run with older children so if you can push yourself to do a little extra, walk the longer way or ditch the car you will feel benefits from it.
Pregnancy Safe Exercises
The most important thing to think when working out is you should still be able to hold a conversation during exercise. There is no need to do strenuous, hard and painful exercises but instead focus on gently increasing your ability and strength. If you start anything new when pregnant, you might want to start with 15 minutes continuous exercise a few times a week, then building up to four 30 minute sessions a week. To work out at home you could Results Wellness Lifestyle fitness app which has a range of pregnancy safe exercises and post-natal exercises too. These might include:
Swimming
Yoga
Walking
Gym
Fitness Classes – always inform your instructor you are pregnant
Pelvic Tilts
Pelvic Floor exercises
Aquafit
Maternity Fitness and Exercise Classes
You might find that your local leisure centre or gym does specific fitness classes for pregnant women. My swimming pool has an Aqua Natal class once a week that I really want to start attending. It’s a great chance to meet other expectant mums. You should ensure the class is taught by a qualified individual. The Aqua Natal in my town is run by my Midwife so I know she will have my safety and health as a priority.
Post Natal Exercise
After you have had your post natal health check, providing all is well, you can start picking up exercise classes again. I have been finding out a few that allow mums to bring their babies along and include a social session afterwards which is amazing. It’s worth checking your leisure centre, children’s centres, speaking to your GP or health visitor to find out if there is something similar in your area.
Postpartum edema, or postpartum swelling, which typically occurs in the extremities (e.g., hands, ankles, and feet) can get in the way of exercising after childbirth. This condition is caused by leftover fluid after giving birth, but swelling can go down over time. You can also manage the discomfort by massaging the area and applying a topical relief gel. Make sure to consult your doctor first about using pain-relief products or medication to ensure that it doesn’t interfere with your recovery or with breastfeeding.
Having a new baby in the home is getting us all so excited and, having a few years of parenting behind me, I know that there isn’t actually a lot of things we will need for this baby. However, we’ve made a few decisions which mean some things are going to be more expensive than others.
We plan to be a bit more eco-friendly this time with reusable nappies, flush-able liners, biodegradable wipes and more Eco-friendly disposable nappies for any ‘just in case’ moments. I also want to use reusable wet wipes more than disposable ones.
I want to breastfeed, and whilst I also plan to express, I don’t want to go and buy any formula or bottle feeding essentials because I want to focus on feeding myself and just using one or two bottles of expressed breast milk
Babies don’t really need a lot of stuff. Somewhere safe to sleep, a pram and clothes are pretty much are basic essentials. Plus, we don’t have a lot of room for big toys, especially when they won’t be using it
A new baby really just wants to feel safe, secure, clean and fed and that is absolutely what we will be focusing on. That being said there are still a few more luxurious items that I like the look of and so have created an Amazon new baby wishlist. I think this is a great way to keep on track what I want to buy, what I have already bought and if any family members or friends kindly offer something then we have a place to refer to when it comes to what we need.
Below, the products items may feature affiliate links which enable me to make a small commission should any products be bought, however, this is never at any cost to you, my readers.
Reusable Nappies & Wipes for a new baby
I am super conscious of how much extra waste a new baby will bring so I am trying to do a little bit more for the environment and look for more biodegradable and reusable options.
Affiliate Link: https://amzn.to/2Kx0qto
This includes reusable nappies and wipes. I spoke to my mum about this and at first she was wasn’t convinced but after showing her some of the gorgeous designs and companies around that supply these nappies, how they save you money and how they last longer she was really on board. I am liking the idea of the all-in-ones and have had some brilliant recommendations from friends.
Affiliate Link: https://amzn.to/2IqD38c
With reusable nappies comes the need for a lidded nappy bin and laundry mesh bag which will really come in handy as well as having lots of extra flushable, disposable liners.
Then we can pop in the dirty nappies and wash them in one go. We have a dryer at home and we have a place to hang wet inserts and covers to dry too as I’ve heard they can become less absorbent over time in a dryer. I worry a bit about them shrinking too which is something we don’t want!
Affiliate Link: https://amzn.to/2IpCD1M
However, it is an expensive outlay cost so whilst we are building up our collection I would like to try some more eco-friendly and less chemically enhanced nappies like Naty and Bamboo.
I have heard and seen amazing things about Cheeky Wipes so I am super keen to get my hand on a set. I think I want to try the bamboo wipes as I’ve heard they’re super absorbant. Other positives I’ve heard are that they’re easy to clean and fresh wipes smell amazing.
Affiliate Link: https://amzn.to/2wRruSa
The kit comes with all you need to get started and, they can be used for sticky hands and faces. Evie still uses wet wipes. I love that the cheeky wipes come with a few essential oils too for keeping clean wipes smelling lovely and dirty wipes not smelling so terrible. Again, these come with a laundry mesh bag which can be popped in the washing machine along with the reusable nappies and as they’re nice and small I think they will dry really quickly. We will probably aim for getting two sets of the actual wipes, one ready to use for hands and faces and one for nappy changes.
Affiliate Link: https://amzn.to/2IooUbI
I also think it will be good to have some disposable wipes on hand just to try things out and I am really glad to have found these 100% biodegradable wet wipes. I think with these sorts of things its a try it and see so I’m hoping to mostly use the reusable cheeky wipes alongside with, mostly, reusable nappies.

A changing bag for getting out the house is obviously something we will be needing and this, really, is more for me. I love Owls so much and so this changing bag is absolutely gorgeous and suitable for anyone carrying the bag (basically, Adam said he’d get a man bag if I got pink lining Yummy Mummy one so we’ve compromised)

Transporting a new baby
It does seem like a travel system is the most cost effective way of getting a carrycot, forward/parent facing and car seat all in one pram. There are so many we love the look of and have had a look around a few different mothercare stores to get a feel for what we like. Adam wants a height adjustable handle, I want something that folds down small and from what we’ve seen from the Mothercare Journey Travel System it ticks all the boxes. Plus for under £300 and coming with a newborn safe car seat we are getting our monies worth. Despite not having a car, of course, but if we do leave the house with family and friends and to avoid getting the bus home after labor with a new baby having a car seat is kind of an essential.
Affiliate Link: https://amzn.to/2ILvqZs
I also really want to use a sling and was recommended the Funky Flamingo sling from a friend recently who said it was amazing, supportive and so comfortable. I love the look of this and I feel like this will be a great option for us. I didn’t have a carrier or do any baby wearing with Evangeline when she was little so I’m looking forward to doing it more with this one.

Where a new baby sleeps
I’ve spoken to so many people about which cot side crib is better and I’ve had a really positive response about the Chicco Next2Me and the Snuzpod. I’m still a little undecided on which one to actually go for because I haven’t seen a Snuzpod in a store yet to get a better idea on the size. I do, however, really like the width of the Chicco Next2Me bedside cot and I’m hoping this will last us quite a bit of time.
Affiliate Link: https://amzn.to/2IRg45T
I like the look of the Cuddle Nest baby pod and have heard a lot of good things about these. In all fairness, I’d like an adult sized one for me to be honest.
Affiliate Link: https://amzn.to/2KuEH5g
With a bed of course comes the need for a mattress protector, fitted sheets and a blanket. This looks like a super cosy swaddle wrap blanket and I think there seems to be a theme going on here with the grey and white. I have to admit I’m actually loving the grey and white and the stars add a lovely bedtime touch.
Affiliate Link: https://amzn.to/2Kwx1zz
I love this cotton star motif blanket which will be great for the pram and car seat. Blankets do get mucky and it’s always good to have a few spares I think.
Affiliate Link: https://amzn.to/2k1BT4n
We all have a super soft fluffy blanket in the home so it’s only fair this little baby gets one too.
Affiliate Link: https://amzn.to/2Gple3y
I also love the look of the Chicco Next2 Stars baby nightlight which I am sure will be a nice comfort.
Affiliate Link: https://amzn.to/2ILNe6Q
Bathing Essentials for a new baby
I was thinking about getting a baby bath and changing unit because we have the space in our bathroom and it will be great for storage but I think we are just going to go with a nice unit that can hold all the changing equipment we need. I love this unit, it’s a great price, a good size and will comfortably fit in our bathroom.
Affiliate Link: https://amzn.to/2rNeXKr
Other things we will be needing are a changing mat which can sit nice and snug at the top, plus it’s portable so I can move it into the living room if and when I need to. I want to avoid doing this though because no matter where we are in the flat it’s just as easy to get in the bathroom with a dirty baby than having everything in the living room. With a decent sized bathroom I want to take advantage of the space.
Affiliate Link: https://amzn.to/2IT69fM
I am also absolutely loving the Child’s Farm baby products. They smell absolutely amazing and I’ve used them with Evie. I much prefer them to other products because they’re nice and natural and great for sensitive baby skin. They are commonly available in Boots, Asda, Waitrose and other supermarkets. They are a little more expensive than some other brands but they’re excellent quality and I love them. I’ve not tried the nappy rash cream yet but I know it will be a great essential to have.
Affiliate Link: https://amzn.to/2rMEkMp
I also love the look and have read so many positive reviews about the Cuddledry Hands Free towel for babies. It looks so soft and cosy and the hands free means you can easily get baby snuggled up and dry quickly.
Affiliate Link: https://amzn.to/2L7blv1
For use in the bath and because they’re practical really and we don’t have one is this little bath mat. I just like it. It’s not really an essential but I suppose will make bathing more comfortable and will stop me slipping a little bit!
Affiliate Link: https://amzn.to/2Ip8AHJ
Other new baby essentials
I’ve mentioned before that I want to breastfeed and that I hope to express. I already have a single electric breast pump to help with this from Lansinoh and I’m hoping I can pump enough breast milk to store for the odd few bottle feeds too. Breast milk storage bags are going to be a handy essential for this as they are freezer safe and just having a bag in the fridge will hopefully help with this. Of course, there’s no guarantee baby will take a bottle so we are planning to introduce a bottle feed fairly early on to try and encourage this.
Affiliate Link: https://amzn.to/2KwxVMi
Muslin squares are of course an essential as they are so handy when feeding, burping, playing with, cleaning up a new baby and all sorts. I am sure we will have a lot of these around the flat, in changing bags, by the bed and changing unit most of the time but having a few nice ones to look at for visual development and as a sensory aid for a new baby are a nice touch.
Affiliate Link: https://amzn.to/2rPTRKC
Reusable breast pads are going to come in handy for me, and again, if I can get something reusable I want to give it a try just to save a bit of money really and again help cut back on waste. These bamboo reusable ones look great.
Affiliate Link: https://amzn.to/2IqB9o4
Lansinoh lanolin nipple cream will be an essential for me during those first few weeks breastfeeding. It was amazing help with Evie plus it can work absolute wonders on cracked heels. Always good to use something that has multi-uses.
MAM dummies. I’ve heard good things about MAM for dummies and they have an anti-colic bottle range too. These just look really cute.
Affiliate Link: https://amzn.to/2k3ymT5
Whilst having an electric steam steriliser is a bulky option for the minimal amount of bottle feeding, and apparently not needed with breastmilk – I didn’t know this! But, I would prefer to have one to make sure any bottles we do use and dummies are nice and clean.
Affiliate Link: https://amzn.to/2wTC3nA
A play mat or play gym is the only toy we are considering buying and I suppose it’s not really a toy but a place I can give the baby some tummy time and lots of lovely things to touch and feel as they get more active. I love this Lamaze one with a bit of a support pillow, beautiful colours and textures.
Affiliate Link: https://amzn.to/2Kw15eN
As I said above I’ve added all of these to my Amazon wishlist so I can tick off everything as we go through and get bits and pieces over the next few months. It’s an exciting time and whilst we don’t need everything on the list right now, or even before this new baby is here, it would help me to feel a little more prepared to have a few of these items.

I’ve talked openly on my blog about my desire to move out of my flat and into a bigger home. With a growing family we are going to need more space and I would love to give my children a garden to play in outside. Not to mention I’d love to be able to provide a lovely nursery for this baby when they come along however, that will have to wait. They will not, however, be able to share my room forever so moving home is something we really need to consider and I’ve put a lot of thought into it alongside the countless amount of times I’ve actually moved around myself. I thought I would put together some top tips on moving home to make it stress free, simple and as easy as possible.
Do not put off the packing. Honestly, as soon as you know you’re going to be moving, even if it takes a couple of months, start packing. Packing for a holiday is overwhelming enough so packing bits and pieces up that you can live without for the next couple of months is ideal.
Arm yourself with boxes, tape, bubble wrap and other packing supplies. Finding a local and reputable place, such as Shurgard Self-Storage to purchase packing supplies are an ideal place to start when considering what you will need to get everything packed up and ready to move.
Take one job at a time. I think the kitchen is a great place to start, you can make do with a few less gadgets for a few weeks and getting them boxed up and ready to go will help make it so much less stressful.
Get vacuum packs to store your clothes and pack up your seasonal wardrobe early. If you’re moving in warmer weather you aren’t going to need a wardrobe full of Christmas jumpers.
Declutter as you go. Get rid of as much as you can that doesn’t work or that you just don’t use.
Moving can be really expensive – consider selling some things online to give yourself some extra cash or help buy new things you might not be able to take with you. Especially if your current property includes white goods but the property you’re moving into does not. I find this is sometimes the case when moving from private rentals to your own home.
Are you up or downsizing? Think about the space you will have in your new property and make sure you have accurate measurements of larger items of furniture such as sofas and beds. You need to make sure what you have will fit into the new home.
If your new property includes furnishings or white goods and you already have them in your current home, if selling is too much of a struggle you could consider donating to a local women’s refuge, homeless shelter or youth centre. Take a look at charities in the area that need items like this because it feels really good to do something for the community and you will be thanked for it.
When packing, thing of clever ways you can store and easily move things such as storing clothes in suitcases for the time being.
Book some time off work to tackle big jobs like the attic, garage or shed. Make a weekend of just getting it sorted and consider hiring a skip because these types of jobs often include throwing out a lot of stuff.
Have a moving weekend party and try and get as many friends and family to help you with the big move. Offer free refreshments at the end of the day and I’m sure you’ll have plenty of people wanting to help out!
Have you moved home recently? Do you have any top tips?

Now I’m getting a little further along in my pregnancy I’ve started thinking about all those things I want and need for myself and the new baby once we’re home. Of course I started making this list before I properly announced my pregnancy on my blog which has just grown bigger and bigger. I am really trying to reign it all in a bit though because we are bringing the baby into a flat. We are already incredibly short of space as it is and in fact we are going to need to move and get rid of stuff before we can bring in the bigger purchases. I mean, as it currently stands, this little one doesn’t even have a chest of drawers or wardrobe for clothes. I am going to have to make use of what we already have to make sure we still have lots of space in the home without feeling too crowded. Hopefully, next year, we will be able to afford to move house!
I did quite a lengthy update of my first trimester and how things were going. At that point we hadn’t bought anything for this little one because I really want to find out the gender. However, that doesn’t stop me putting a list together and coming up with a bit of a wish list.
Breastfeeding Essentials
I fully intend to breastfeed for at least six months with this new baby. The truth is though, my breastfeeding journey with Evie was awful. I was belittled by a nursery nurse acting in place of my health visitor because Evie wasn’t gaining weight. I was forced to combination feed with formula at a really emotional state and before breastfeeding was even established. In hindsight, thinking about this continues to make me quite angry because I don’t feel I was given enough of a chance to try. Yes it was hard and I was feeding around the clock but this has made me really want to try and avoid formula milk. I have no problems with those that bottle feed at all because I know I am going to struggle and quite probably avoid breastfeeding in anywhere but my own home. Because of this we have made the choice to use breast milk exclusively with a combination of breastfeeding and expressing. I’m really happy with this choice and I am confident this will be the absolute best choice for our family.
My breastfeeding essentials are going to include the following:
An electronic double breast pump – I’m currently looking at the Medela Swing pump
Breast pads
Bottles, bottle brush and steriliser
Freezer bags for breast milk
Support pillow
Lansinoh cream – this is amazing for cracked nipples and I will absolutely have a tube at home for those first couple of weeks. It’s pretty amazing on cracked heels too!
For this baby I really want to get a bedside crib because they look really lovely. I’ve never had a problem co-sleeping and did with Evie, particularly when we lived in the hostel together. It’s not something I’m ruling out with this baby either but Adam does have some reservations as he is a roller in the night. A bedside crib sounds like it will be our best option. Our hope is that it will last between birth and we are able to move next Spring (hopefully) because we just don’t have the space in our bedroom for a full sized cot. There isn’t space in Evie’s room either and I really want to avoid them sharing a room with such a big age gap. There are loads of amazing bedside cribs available and I am absolutely stuck for choice! My two favourites are the CHicco Next 2 Me Side Crib and the SnuzPod 3 in 1 Bedside crib.
I love Grobags or baby sleeping bags. They are perfect to keep baby snug and warm at night. Our baby is due 20th September so it won’t be long until those nights are feeling colder and darker once again. There are lots of these available and they were so great for Evie, who was also a September baby, and loved being kept snug in her sleeping bag at night.
Now this is probably going to be one of our biggest purchases because they just don’t come cheap do they? I have my eye on a couple that are absolutely lovely but really I want to go out and test drive a few before I decide on which one is for us. Adam is 6’5″ and I’m 5’4″ so ideally we are looking for one with a height adjustable handle to make it easy for both of us. Despite not being a driver we are considering a travel system just because we’re still going to need a car seat for getting home from the hospital as well as any journeys we do make with friends or family. I like the idea of having a travel system that goes from newborn bassinet to stroller too and hopefully it will last us a couple of years.
Available to Buy: http://amzn.to/2G2GxvB
Our favourite is the Giggle2 Cosatto Pram which comes in loads of different colours and I see them in use all the time. We’ve already had a bit of a play around with this one in Mothercare, however, I know there are a few others out there that I want to try too. Mostly, the pushchair will be upright and ready to use at a moments notice because of the amount we walk but we would like one that folds quite small. So far, in theory and appearance the Giggle2 ticks all of our boxes and is at a comfortable height for both of us to push. Later down the line though, we might find an even better one.
Baby Bath & Changing Unit
Now I know a lot of people would say that actually these aren’t an essential. You don’t need a baby bath if you can bath in the sink or in your own bath. You could simply use a bath seat instead to keep handsfree too. However, for us, a bath and changing unit is a bit of an essential because it doubles up as storage space. I will be keeping this in my bathroom which is actually bit enough to hold it without it getting in the way. We then have a place for storing nappies, bath toys, wipes, creams and all the other bits that you always need. It’s as much extra storage for us as anything else. Being in a flat means that nothing is far away so I don’t have to rush upstairs to change the baby when I can just go into the next room. We had a changing table with Evie and it really came in handy. It was still in use as she got older for storage too.
Available to Buy Online: http://amzn.to/2ICI3Dk
I love the look of the Easi Peasi Fable Changer by Cosatto. There’s even a magical unicorns design which Evie is very much drawn to.
Stretchy Wrap for Newborns
I didn’t have a wrap with Evie so babywearing is completely new to me. Hopefully my plans for a VBAC go ahead as wanted and I can start wrapping up soon after. I love the idea of having the baby close to me, comforted and most importantly being hands free. As I’ve mentioned before we walk a lot and sometimes a wrap or carrier is going to be easier and quicker than a pushchair or big bulky pram. The idea of having the baby close and secure whilst I help Evie with her homework or get on with a few things around the house really appeals to me as well as when getting out and about too. I don’t know if it will help with breastfeeding just because there aren’t many positions I can really feed in due to my size but wraps seem to be used for so much more. I want to watch a few videos and have a practise tying it all together before the baby is here to try and get some practise in.
Baby Play Mat
I had a couple of these soft activity mats with Evie when she was little and think they’re great for tummy time. I especially love ones that have lots of textures for babies to feel and play with as they start getting a bit bigger and it will add a nice bit of colour into the living room too. We won’t be getting much when it comes to toys because of space but I think a play mat like this is a great buy.
So that is our little list of newborn baby essentials to help me with breastfeeding, getting out the home and giving the baby a little quality tummy time too. What essentials would you recommend for a new baby?

If you are looking for a family holiday and have never considered going cruising before, please read on. We were lucky enough to go on a cruise to Norway in 2016 and earlier in 2015 we went to Bruges. To say we enjoyed ourselves is an understatement. The whole family had a great time, so I would say that cruising with children is a good idea. However, there are a few things you need to be aware of and consider before you book.
Be sure to do your own research
It is important to do your own research before booking. There is no harm in asking a travel agent for suggestions or looking at sites like mine to get some ideas about where to go and who to travel with.
However, before you actually book, take some time to find out as much as you can about that particular cruise. Every ship is different. So, if your kids love climbing walls you want to be sure the boat you book has one. Doing your own research ensures you pick up on the little things that you know are important for you and your children. No matter how good your travel agent is they do not know your kids like you do.
How welcome will your kids be?
When looking for a cruise it is important to book yourself onto a ship that specifically caters for children. This is the best way to ensure that you and your family will be welcome on board rather than just tolerated. You want your children to be able to relax and not to have to keep them quiet all day long when you are at sea.
It is always nice for your children to have someone their own age to play with. Choosing to travel on a ship that specifically caters for children is the best way to make sure that there will be other families onboard.
Book early
If you can, book early. Family-friendly cruises tend to sell out fast, so leaving it too late could lead to disappointment. Booking early has the added benefit of keeping the price down. Most cruise firms offer the best discounts when they first release the cabins for sale.
Get your children involved
Once you have narrowed down the options, see what the kids think. Getting them involved in the final choice is a great way of making sure they have a good time.
Try a mini-cruise first
Booking a short cruise is the ideal way to work out whether this type of holiday is really right for you and your children. It is a relatively inexpensive way for you to put your toe in the water (pun not intended).
Tips for enjoying your cruise
The above covers booking your cruise. If you want to find out more about how to get the most out of your shipboard holiday, click this link. When you do you will be taken to an article that contains 9 further tips that will ensure that you and your children can relax and have a good time once you are onboard.
