i absolutely love the wall hanging. it’s so cool, the artwork is beautiful and it features lots of fun mythical beasts. i also love a niffler so our magnet has pride of place on the fridge already. the pin is very cute, i love his dark materials, it’s a great series. the book sounds really interesting and one i can’t wait to get stuck in reading. i love seeing so much art too from different creators and having nice new things in my home.

book boxes are bringing me a little bit of joy during these weird times. i’m looking forward to reading a new book and adding it to my reading challenge for the year. i have a feeling i will absolutely reach my goal of 52 books read this year!

i like the idea of joining in with the clubhouse too and discussing the book with the author and other people that enjoyed the read. there are a few different ways people are doing this such as groups on good reads or comments on dedicated book read blog posts.

    madame alchemie apothecarie & perfumerie

as you should know by now i love reading, particularly fantasy books. i’m becoming more and more engaged in the bookstagram community on ig and have started subscribing to book boxes. from this i’m finding out loads of amazing bookish businesses that create wonderful products and talented artists. i think, so far, my absolute favourite has been discovering madame alchemie.

god of lies rollerball perfume that was included in the illumicrate february box

i received a rollerball perfume named god of lies inspired by the winner’s curse series and featured as an exclusive in the illumicrate february book box. since then i treated myself to some goodies for mothers day and now they’re here i am thrilled with my purchases which all smell just as amazing as i knew they would.

high lady rollerball perfume is inspired by a certain fabulous female protagonist from a court of thorns and roses

i decided to get the high lady rollerball perfume, deck of destiny whipped body butter, the maiden death bath soak and wraith lip balm. i was so impressed with the first rollerball perfume that came with the book box that i needed to try more products straight away. mikayla also sent me a lovely free gift of the kingmaker bath soak which smells so good i will absolutely be ordering a full bottle of that one.

madame alchemie is still currently operating her small business whilst she can but has decided to limit posting to once a week and is taking every health and safety precaution and ensuring the products are clean and safe. if she does choose or close temporarily she will have a customer for life in me when she returns.

the maiden death epsom salts bath soak in a glass bottle

i am becoming more and more passionate now i’m finding small businesses to buy from that are more in line with the type of products i love and want to use and share. madame alchemie’s products are all vegan, cruelty free and as ethically sourced as possible. packaging is plastic free and reusable which is great too. processing time is around a week as order are made to order. most products are in glass jars and tins and they just look beautiful anyway. the sample of kingmaker was in resealable plastic pouch but considering the type of product and wanting to dispatch it safely, plus the removal of most plastics, i’m really impressed.

i absolutely love the scent of the kingmaker bath soak, it reminds me a lot of a lush bubble bar, the comforter, with the blackcurrent fragrance. i love epsom salts, they make a bath feel like a spa and the bathroom just smells so good after using them. the wraith lip balm is scented with lemon and peppermint and melts on, its lovely. i wanted the high lady perfume as i’m a fan of jasmine and find those perfumes work well with my skin, i was not disapointed and now happy to have two beautifully smelling rollerball fragrances. the whipped body butter is probably my favourite scent out of my products and i will absolutely be getting the whole collection. there’s something wonderful about cocoa butter i think! and of course the maiden death bath salt soak which i can’t wait to use! upcoming products include a reed difusser which i need in my life

  • there is an atmosphere of anger

there is an atmosphere of anger

felix has conjunctivitus and after a telephone consultation with the doctor he was prescribed some antibiotic eye drops. adam went out yesterday to collect from the pharmacy (who didn’t have it, because the doctor didn’t send it until the end of the day) but that is beside the point. he came home saying how weird it was walking around town whilst going to the pharmacy and then the supermarket to get us a few bits and pieces.

people are now, rightly so, being asked to wait in line outside stores and pharmacies to maintain social distancing and so staff can have enough time to restock shelves – we are going to see a massive decrease in stockpilling and hopefully staff will be working without abuse – but the energy coming from some of these people was anger. but who are they angry at?

i don’t know about you but i’ve kind of started to feel peace and acceptance at what is going on now we have some clarity over schools and workplaces. i know my grandparents are being cautious. both my parents are considered key workers (my dad will never let people forget this) and are obviously worried but taking precautions and following guidelines and government advice. my sisters and step dad can work at home so they too are moving on with their new normal for now.

did other people not see this coming? are they angry at their workplaces for being twatish? let’s face it, there are quite a few bosses being absolute horrors during this, caring only about money and not the welfare and wellbeing of their staff. are they just suspicious and angry because they don’t know who might have the virus? are they just angry because that’s the stage of grief they’re at right now? i don’t know.

what i do know is that this too shall pass. that this anger will filter down into sadness, depression, possibly relief and then acceptance. i know that despite ramping up testing and antibody kits, people can catch this virus twice which carries more complex risk and complications. i do know that we are going to see more and more losses of life which is heartbreakingly sad – especially when i have family members that are hugely at risk.

i don’t think the government are helping really. i think they’ve had seven weeks to prepare for this and they haven’t acted quick enough. i think boris is more concerned about being liked than giving strict sanctions and orders. i think a tory government and cuts over the last ten years are massively to blame for the shortages in the nhs, the police and the other emergency services. i think the bailout package for workers has been designed in a way to say a big f you to the eu as some sort of “look, we can cope without you, look what we’re doing for our country” although they haven’t raised statutory sick pay yet which is inexcusable being one of the worst paid in europe. but anyway, the political scrutiny will come after, as long as people remember.

i think this is our new normal until the summer. we need to stay home as much as possible. we need to take advantage of the allowance outside for exercise whilst we still can. we need to protect ourselves and our loved ones by socially distancing from others. we need to make the best out of a bad situation. we need to facetime our friends and family instead of visiting. we need to just focus on being a little patient, a little kinder and a little gentler to ourselves and each other.

for now at home we have books to read, games to play, intruments to try and learn, apps to have fun with and a lot of love for our little family. we will ge through this. we will carve the path between complacency and panic so that we’re staying safe as we possibly can.

  • high bmi pregnancy during a pandemic

high bmi pregnancy during a pandemic

high risk pregnancy is something i know a little bit about – because i’ve been there. i’ve written a lot about my experience of a high bmi pregnancy however i’ve never had to look at what that means for those experiencing a high risk due to bmi pregnancy during a global pandemic.

the truth is no one is exactly sure how long this will last for, but it’s predicted to be hitting us pretty hard in the uk for the next 12 weeks. many women are probably thinking what should i do if i give birth in the next 12 weeks? of course the first two things you need to be doing is washing your hands and staying at home. the most important things to attend are your planned or routine pregnancy care appointments or if you need medical attention. you should still continue to call your labour ward or midwife if the amount of kicks you feel change.

if you’re pregnant and think you might have symptoms of covid-19 then the advice is to access nhs 111 online for what action to take and to self isolate as much as you can for the next 7 days, or 14 days if it’s a household. if you start labour during that self isolation period, when you call the labour line to inform them let them know you’ve been experiencing symptoms.

pregnant and in lockdown, what should i do?

if you’re pregnant and in lockdown due to covid-19 then there are plenty of things you can do if you’re feeling well enough. there are plenty of pregnancy books to read to help prepare you for birth. you might consider writing your birth plan during this time. another option would be to try hypnobirthing. there’s an amazing online hypnobirthing course i did which went into so much detail about pregnancy, labour and included some great relaxation techniques by the positive birthing company. i really recommend the digital pack. you might want to do some pregnancy focused safe-to-do home workouts or yoga.

where should i give birth if i’m high risk?

this is going to be a tough one to answer if you’re due to give birth during a nation wide lockdown. it’s important to note that this still remains your choice and one you should make as an informed person from information you have read. you need to weigh up all the pros and cons to giving birth somewhere you feel safe and any previous pregnancy experience. if you decide to give birth at home then you need to be prepared for some friction against this because, during a pandemic, it will be easier for your midwives and obsetricians if you give birth in hospital.

some trusts are putting restrictions during labour which means only having one birth partner and not allowing any visitors, including any of your children, to come into hospital after birth. this is to limit the risk of the virus being carried around a maternity ward and further throughout the hospital. these are all things to weigh up in the decision making of where to give birth.

protecting your mental health if you can’t have the birth you want

taking some of these choices away from you can be really hard to get your head around and may have you feeling anxious or even depressed. it’s natural to feel that way and your feelings are completely valid. to protect your mental health there are some questions you might want to ask your hospital trust in advance so that you can have the best possible labour and birth experience. this is why a birth plan can be really helpful, you can plan for any and all circumstances. ask about having low lights and aromatheraphy, ask about birthing pools and balls. hypnobirthing will also really help here too as it can teach you some great breathing techniques that help through moments of anxiety.

most importantly, talk after giving birth about how you feel. talk about your experience if that makes you feel better. let it out, even if it seems trivial. in this weird unprecendented time no one really knows what they’re doing but your health care providers are trying to keep you and everyone else safe. it’s a worrying and concering time for many expectant mothers, including lower risk ones, but how you feel is still worth taking the time to talk about.

  • the midnight lie – book review

the midnight lie – book review

the midnight lie by marie rutkoski is a recent read of mine from the illumicrate february book box subscription. it’s a ya fantasy fiction book and i rate it 4/5 stars.

the blurb: “where nirrim lives, crime abounds, a harsh tribunal rules, and society’s pleasures are reserved for the high kith. life in the ward is grim and punishing. nirrim keeps her head down and a dangerous secret close to her chest. but then she encounters sid, a rakish traveler from far away who whispers rumours that the high caste posesses magic. sid tempts nirrim to seek that magic for herself. but to do that, nirrim must surrender her old life. she must place her trust in this sly stranger who asks, above all, not to be trusted.”

the illumicrate edition had an exclusive cover, sprayed edges and is signed by the author. the book cover really is beautiful and i loved the pink sprayed edges. i joined in with the readalong too which is basically an online book club. we read the book in sections and then discuss each part in a private group.

the midnight lie really surprised me. it was a good read and i enjoyed it. it was really interesting reading nirrim go from “it is the way it is” to wanting justice and equality for her people. the way she went around it, however, to me was completely unexpected. there were a few twists in this book which i just didn’t expect at all. i loved the romance in this too.

there were themes of manipulation, gaslighting and bribery within the book which really helped me build empathy for nirrim during the story. nirrim’s secret could seriously get her into trouble and she lives in a world where she has to pay a tithe when caught by the guards. sometimes it’s as simple as hair or a bit of blood, other times it’s much more sinister and might be eyes or limbs. other times children go missing from the ward never to be seen again. you really do want the best for nirrim throughout the story and it was really interesting reading so many first time experiences through her eyes.

the reason for 4 stars was because the book is beautifully written, easy to follow and has an unexpected and enjoyable plot. i took away a star because some of the plot points were really easy to guess and the end felt very abrupt and was over far too quickly. i would recommend this as a great travel book or for a little bit of light hearted escapism.

One of my goals for 2020 is to read 52 books or around one a week. Some might be new, some are ones I’ve had for a while or been meaning to read, some I haven’t quite finished yet and some will be recommendations from others. You can see all the books I’ve read so far on my Good Reads 2020 Reading Challenge.
